 It is a sad truth that after the holidays shelters receive an influx of unwanted animals that were given as gifts. This puts a strain on shelters, like the OSPCA, who are already low on supplies and space. The society has put together packages to help with the demand at this time of year. There is a wide variety of packages to choose from in all price ranges. You can provide a shelter cat or dog with a complete health check that includes a veterinary examination, vaccinations, and medication. Or perhaps you would like to make the holidays a little happier for a cat or dog who has to spend them in a shelter by filling their stocking with a new toy or blanket. To help prevent future generations of animals from ending up in a shelter, you can have a cat or dog spayed or neutered.  Many animal lovers are united by a compassion for animals. We want to see them well, to care for them, and to see them treated properly. Give a charitable donation in your friend's name. It's a gift for her and for a happy animal out there somewhere.
Some charities you may wish to consider are the World Wildlife Foundation, saving and protecting a variety of animals from polar bears and pandas to leopards and sharks; the WSPA, rescuing animals from cruelty and abuse; or try a different approach with the Nature Conservancy, protecting Canada's land so that our animals and biodiversity can flourish.
